NSF Invests $83M Data Backbone Powering AI-for-Science Alongside Genesis Mission

The dirty secret of AI-driven science is not the lack of computing power — it is the data. Researchers at universities and national laboratories across the country have accumulated vast stores of scientific data over decades, but those datasets sit in thousands of incompatible institutional repositories, formatted differently, tagged inconsistently, and effectively invisible to the AI models that could transform them into breakthroughs. On Wednesday, the National Science Foundation announced $83 million in awards through its new Integrated Data Systems and Services program to address exactly that bottleneck.
